What is IGCSE Mathematics?

Questions often arise asking about the need to learn Mathematics, the application of algebra and other skills obtained whilst studying the subject and its usefulness in our daily life and future careers. The skills that you learn in any Mathematics course may be applicable in life even if you are not studying to become an engineer or an accountant.  Many entry-level jobs require employees to have some knowledge of Mathematics.  Even understanding the basic mathematical functions can be advantageous. Here is a list of important skills obtained from learning Mathematics:

  3. Ability to see relationships
  4. Problem solving skills

Which subjects combine well with Mathematics?

Mathematics at GCSE level is a CORE subject.

 

Course outline

Numbers: Number, fractions, decimals and ratios, factors, powers and roots

Algebra: Formulas and equations, inequalities, graphs, quadratic equations, sequences

Data handling: Collecting data, averages, representing data, probability

Shape, space and measures: Shapes, coordinates, transformations and vectors, calculating lengths, areas and angles, measurements

 

How is it assessed?

The course is designed to meet the requirements of Edexcel IGCSE Mathematics syllabus.  Assessment comprises two written papers, each of two hours.  There is no coursework.

Mostly we prepare our students for the higher tier curriculum (Papers 4MAO/3H and 4MAO/4H), which will give you the best chance of gaining grades A* - C.  We also offer the course at foundation tier (Papers 4MAO/1F and 4MA0/2F) for those who feel more comfortable with that.  The highest grade achievable at foundation level is grade C.  The exam is offered in both January and June of each year.
