What is IGCSE English –Second Language?
IGCSE English as a Second Language is designed for students who already have a working knowledge of the language and who want to consolidate their understanding in order to progress in their academic or professional career. The aim is to achieve a practical level of communication ideal for everyday use, which can also form the basis for further study.
IGCSE English as a Second Language is accepted by universities and employers as proof of ability to understand and communicate in English. It is aimed at students whose first language is not English, therefore using it as a lingua franca or language of study. Successful candidates have better educational or employment prospects and gain lifelong skills, including:
- better communicative ability in English
- improved understanding of a range of social registers and styles
- a greater awareness of language-learning skills
- a sound foundation for progression to employment or further study including AS and A Level GCE
What aspects are tested?
Students will complete a range of tasks often required for further educational study i.e. note-taking, summarising, to assess reading, writing, listening and speaking skills.
How will I be assessed?
The exam is divided into three parts:
- Reading/Writing Paper: This element has an overall weighting of 70%. It is divided into two levels that of Core or Extended. Level selection is dependant upon students’ abilities.
- Listening Paper: With a weighting of 30%, this section is also divided into Core or Extended.
- Oral endorsement: This section is graded individually therefore not contributing to the overall grade. It does however provide an overall guide to accuracy and fluency for prospective universities and/or employers.
