What is Further Mathematics?
Mathematics is a vast subject studying numbers, quantities, shape, space, their relationships, and a lot more. Further Mathematics, in turn, describes a course studied in addition to the standard A Level Mathematics. It provides deeper grounding in, and greater conceptual understanding of, both Pure and Applied Mathematics by introducing students to such topics as complex numbers, matrix algebra, differential equations, Taylor series, and others. All these ideas are extremely important for the establishment of many scientific concepts present today and, for those passionate about Mathematics, are very interesting to learn in their own right. By the end of the course you will have taken your mathematical aptitude to a higher level and developed further your logical, numerical and problem-solving skills.
Which subjects combine well with Further Mathematics?
Further Mathematics combines well with most other subjects, particularly those with a significant mathematical content such as Physics, Chemistry, Economics, Accounting and ICT. Surprisingly, there are even some mathematical applications in Geography and Psychology. In a broader sense, the subject reinforces one’s logical thinking skills and ability to correctly manipulate, synthesize and interpret numerical data, which is of great use in almost any area of rigorous study.
What careers and University courses can Further Mathematics lead to?
Further Maths is currently the fastest-growing of all subjects taught at A Level, which reflects the fact that greater knowledge of Maths often results in higher university admission chances. Studying the subject is highly recommended, and an A or A* grade strongly preferred, at such Russell Group universities as Oxbridge, Imperial, LSE and UCL.
A Mathematics degree, to which it usually leads, is highly valued by employers due to the skills in analysis, problem-solving and, of course, numeracy, that it develops. Many graduates have chosen to use their mathematical skills in careers in the City of London, such as trading and risk analysis; in banking, insurance and other financial services; and in scientific research, IT and industry. However, this is not an exhaustive list as the transferable skills gained through study of Mathematics are, in general, of wide applicability in many career paths.

AS Unit FP1: 33% (6667)
The first module will introduce you to the fundamental ideas of complex numbers, matrices, summation of finite series in polynomials, and proof by contradiction; expand your knowledge of parabolae and hyperbolae, and toolkit of numerical techniques to include Newton-Raphson method.
AS Unit S2: 33% (6684)
This is arguably the most important module in the whole A Level Statistics course because it presents key statistical concepts such as: Binomial & Poisson distributions and their Normal distribution approximations, continuous random variables (including continuous uniform distribution), hypothesis testing; and equips you with knowledge of sampling techniques for large & small populations.
AS Unit M2: 33% (6678)
Building on the knowledge gained in the M1 module, you will start studying some “serious” Mechanics: projectile motion, centres of mass, work-energy principle and power, collisions of particles; and learn more about statics of rigid bodies.
A2 Unit FP2: 33% (6668)
Here, you will continue studying the applications of complex numbers, and summation of series. While the rules for manipulating inequalities will be formalised, the module will also present you with new topics, namely first & second order differential equations, and the Maclaurin and Taylor Series.
A2 Unit FP3: 33% (6669)
In the final module of Further Pure Maths, you will learn several mathematical ideas and notions that are crucial to understanding higher level Mathematics at university. They include: hyperbolic functions, conic sections, further matrix algebra, and advanced calculus. Results and formulae given in the chapter on vectors will lay solid foundation for understanding geometrical objects in 3D-space.
A2 Unit S3: 33% (6691)
For those planning to study Statistics-related degrees, this is a must-take option: such important concept as the Central Value Theorem is introduced, together with confidence intervals, sampling methods, linear combinations of random variables, goodness of fit tests, and contingency tables.
