Unlike the GCSE in English, IGCSE English Language A is based entirely on the two written examinations, with no course work or any speaking and listening components.  This helps our students as it relieves the pressure of coursework and also enables them to concentrate on improving their written English without having to spend time on speaking and listening assignments.

IGCSE English Language Specification A is comprised of two examinations, both of which test comprehension skills and essay writing.  Paper 1 involves two questions, one testing response to an unseen passage of prose, the second passage taken from the prescribed anthology.  Paper 2 also contains a comprehension question taken from the anthology.  All the passages from the anthology (prose and poetry) will be studied in depth during the year.

In addition to studying the anthology, the course is totally focused on exam technique and is mainly taught by working through past papers.  In addition to the comprehension questions, the two papers also contain essay questions which require the student to use styles of writing which analyse, describe, argue and persuade.
