Bank of England

While our Business and Finance students may know it by the acronym BoE, the UK's central bank site holds a special place in the hearts of many City of London visitors. Synonymous with the quintessential bowler-hatted English businessman of a bygone era, the Bank of England’s steps, right by Bank station, are a good place to sit and watch the world rush by. Established in 1694 to act as the English Government's banker, the Bank of England is still one of the bankers for the Government of the United Kingdom and is the world's eighth oldest bank.

Anyone who has watched the classic musical Mary Poppins (1964) with Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, or its follow-up Mary Poppins Returns (2018) with Emily Blunt and Lin Manuel-Miranda, will have seen the hallowed Bank of England stairway onscreen. This grand building, flanked by statues, remains the centre of the City’s business and financial district, and may soon be a feature of your walks to and from the College.
