What is Spanish?
Spanish is the second most common language in the world, spoken by over 300 million people in more than 20 countries. Preparing for GCSE Spanish will allow students to explore and appreciate Spanish culture through its language and to develop the skills of speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
Which subjects complement Spanish? Spanish combines well with a number of other subjects. The related disciplines of other languages, Business Studies, ICT and Economics are obvious examples. Other suitable subjects are Art and Design (Photography), Law and Travel & Tourism.
What careers and University courses can Spanish lead to?
With the growing expectation that candidates applying for jobs should be competent in at least one foreign language, Spanish is suitable for students wishing to pursue a wide variety of courses and subsequent careers.
There are four skills tested in the examination: speaking, listening, reading and writing; all carry equal weighting.
- Unit 1 - Listening Higher Tier: 40 minutes (5SP01) 20%
- Unit 2 - Speaking Higher Tier: 10-12 minutes (5SP02) 30%
- Unit 3 - Reading & Responding Higher Tier: 50 minutes (5SP03) 20%
- Unit 4 - Writing Higher Tier: 1 hour (5SP04) 30%
