David Game College announces a new STEM Pathway, focusing on Engineering, Physics, Computer Science and Technology

From September 2022 David Game College is pleased to announce that it will offer students a dedicated STEM pathway, focusing on Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. This new pathway will work alongside and support its existing Medical and Lifesciences Pathway, which deals with medical entry, Neuroscience, Genomic Medicine and a wide range of other life science-based subjects.

Why this pathway?

STEM subjects have never been more popular, and more importantly, more relevant. The world in the 21st Century is undergoing exponential change. Virtually every aspect of our everyday lives is being impacted by technological advancement and disruption. Finance is being disrupted by cryptocurrencies, Big Data and Blockchain, all within a Fintech framework, and the growth of artificial intelligence, robotics and machine-learning occurs at an incredible pace, impacting the short-term employment market.   

There no doubt that artificial intelligence (amongst other technologies) can amplify human creativity and provide stable job prospects over the next 20-30 years.  We are witnessing the emergence of the fascinating and exciting era of the 4th Industrial Revolution, which is blurring the boundaries between the physical, digital and the biological world. It is characterised by speed of change, hyper specialisation and a requirement for understanding mathematics, computing and how this can be applied to create driverless vehicles, robotic surgeons, or a quantum computer that can calculate at speeds over 150 million times faster than a classical computer!

Meta (formerly Facebook) have announced the Metaverse, which will transform how we interact and create a new economy in which we trade and live. The Metaverse will use artificial reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) to create a mirror world in which people can interact for all sorts of things.  Avatars in mixed reality will become the “norm” and this is just one of many reasons why it is important to highlight why students should seriously consider STEM subjects to embrace and be part of the technological revolution that is occurring before us.  Be part of one of the most exciting STEM pathways in the UK.

The College’s Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry departments will work together to ensure that students who are interested in these established and emerging degree courses have a deeper understanding of them and can apply their hand to:

  • Coding
  • Basic robotics
  • Concepts in astrophysics
  • Advanced Mathematics for Physics, Engineering, Computing and Data Science
  • Understanding concepts, such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and quantum computing and Internet of Things (IoT)
  • AV and AR Headsets  - their use and application
  • 3-D and 4-D Printing
  • Using guide telescopes to explore the heavens (Astronomy Club)

The College is developing a new Computer Suite and designing a course that allows students the opportunity to learn about new technologies from their teachers, and outside specialist speakers from leading universities and industry.

Dr Pooley

Dr Pooley holds undergraduate and doctoral degrees in Physics from the University of Canterbury, New Zealand, where his research focused on the spectroscopic and photometric monitoring of star constellations.  Prior to joining David Game in 2004, Dr Pooley worked as a private tutor and a visiting lecturer at the Universidad de Los Andes, Venezuela.  He is a keen astronomer, a member of the Hampstead Scientific Society and a proficient web developer, skilled in a range of programming languages including C, Java and Fortran.  

Dr S. Amir

Dr Amir holds a first degree from Oxford in Physics and his PhD in Mathematics from Imperial College.  Dr Amir did post-doctoral research in numerical calculations on fungal growth (modelling) at Imperial in conjunction with the Niels Bohr Institute (Copenhagen). He also worked for Citibank as a mathematical modeller for option pricing.

Dr B Meghani         

Holds a MEng in Chemical Engineering from UCL and a PhD from Nottingham, specialising in Computer-based Chemical Engineering.  He has been a researcher at the National Nuclear Laboratory and has extensive knowledge of computer science, programming and applications.
